Chao czyli wietnamski krupnik. Chao to zupa gotowana na bazie ryżu. W przeszłości, zanim Wietnam wprowadził reformę „Doi Moi”, w sklepach nawet octu na półkach nie było, ponieważ nie było sklepów…. a mleko na czarnym rynku było bardzo drogie, to rodzice karmili dzieci zupą chao z dodatkiem soli. Obecnie, gdzie półki sklepowe są pełne, chao nie jest już tak popularne jak kiedyś, chociaż nawet w Sajgonie czy w Ha Noi można spotkać pojedyńcze punkty gastronomiczne serwujące „krupnik”. Chao podawane jest z dodatkiem wieprzowiny, kurczaka, krewetek… Mimo, że zupa jest prosta, to warto spróbować miseczkę, szczególnie podczas zimy w Ha Noi, tak na rozgrzewkę!
